It could have been very different for Milner
Liverpool midfielder James Milner has revealed he nearly signed for rivals Everton when he was a youth player but a trial fell through.
Milner has had an illustrious career in the Premier League, with his most successful days coming with Manchester City and Liverpool.
The Englishman won several trophies during his time at the Etihad, including two Premier League titles.
Milner then joined Liverpool and was part of their Champions League-winning squad last season.
Though, Milner has now revealed that he could have signed for Liverpool’s rivals Everton in his youth.
“The first club that showed an interest was Everton”
In his new book ‘Ask a Footballer’, as cited by the Liverpool Echo, Milner revealed that he had a trial set up with Everton.
However, due to snow, the game was called off and the Toffees never called him after that.
“The first club that showed an interest was Everton,” Milner explained.
“I might even have ended up signing for them if my trial hadn’t been called off because of snow.
“I played a district match in Crosby and I was told afterwards an Everton scout had been watching and wanted me to go on trial.
“That was the first time I had even thought about the possibility of being a footballer, but then the trial game got called off because of snow.
“We kept waiting for another phone call, but it never came, so I thought my chance might have come and gone.”
Safe to say, Everton missed a trick by not maintaining their interest.
