West Ham vs Tottenham

Saturday’s early Premier League clash saw Tottenham travel to West Ham United.

The tie was Jose Mourinho’s first game in charge of Spurs after he replaced Mauricio Pochettino earlier this week.

After their dismal start to the campaign, Mourinho has a mammoth task on his hands if he wishes to get the North London outfit back into a top-four spot.

The Lilywhites began the weekend down in a rather embarrassing 14th place after amassing just three league wins from their opening 12 ties.

But Saturday’s game represented a real chance for Mourinho to hit the ground running in his latest role.

West Ham were without a victory in their previous six PL ties prior to kicking off on Saturday.

This put Manuel Pellegrini’s side down to 16th in the league, a point behind Spurs.

Here are three key talking points from the clash.

Alli’s struggles

One of the many tasks Jose Mourinho is faced with after taking over at Spurs is helping Dele Alli rediscover his top form.

Since making the switch to Spurs from MK Dons Alli has cemented himself as one of Tottenham’s brightest attacking assets.

Before facing West Ham, in 194 appearances across all competitions for Spurs, Alli had found the back of the net 55 times and provided 50 assists.

However, the 23-year-old’s form has dipped off somewhat recently, particularly at the beginning of this campaign.

While Alli has had to deal with some injury woes, the midfielder hasn’t looked very sharp in the games he has featured in for Spurs this term.

Mourinho seemed aware of Alli’s difficulties with the coveted manager already speaking about the Englishman.

The Spurs boss stated he has already spoken to Alli to ask him to play like Alli:

“I asked him if he was Dele or Dele’s brother. He told me he was Dele. ‘OK,’ I said. ‘Play like Dele.’” As quoted by The Guardian.

Alli reinvigorated under Mourinho

But who turned up against the Hammers, was it Alli or his brother?

During the first 45 at the Olympic stadium, Alli certainly showed signs of improvement.

Less than five minutes in the midfielder played a ball through to Harry Kane who rifled it into the back of the net, but Kane was offside.

After setting up Kane, Alli continued to make some promising runs in behind, played some key passes and certainly looked as though he had a bit of a free-roaming role.

Alli’s efforts were eventually rewarded in the 36th minute when he played a smart ball to Heung-Min Son who eventually slotted home to give Spurs a 1-0 lead.

Alli then played a pivotal role in Spurs’ second of the day.

After slipping over Alli showed a desire to keep the ball in play and pass it off to Son whilst he was on the floor.

Son then burst down the wing and crossed the ball to Lucas who tapped it in to give Spurs a 2-0 lead just before the interval.

Alli’s second-half display wasn’t quite as impressive but it was fairly clear what a positive impact Mourinho has already had on him.

Roberto continues to disappoint

When Lukasz Fabianski suffered an injury vs Bournemouth at the back end of September, West Ham fans were likely quite upset but they also probably didn’t think his replacement would be so terrible.

Goalkeepers are often put into the spotlight more than others when they make an error as their mistakes more often than not, lead directly to a goal.

However, Roberto has not just made one or two mistakes since his promotion to the Hammers’ number one shot-stopper. The Spaniard has been pretty terrible in every game he has featured in this season.

Roberto seems incapable of judging the right time to catch or punch the ball, he has spilled the ball on several occasions recently and just seems to lack any sort of confidence.

That lack of confidence looks to be spreading to the West Ham backline with the Hammers having failed to win all seven of their league ties this season when Roberto has been between the sticks.

And after another abysmal outing vs Spurs, perhaps West Ham are better served starting David Martin in their next clash.

Tottenham win away

In all the excitement of Mourinho’s first game in charge, Spurs fans may have forgotten about their rather embarrassing away record.

Prior to Saturday’s outing, Tottenham hadn’t notched up an away win in the Premier League since January.

That victory came against now Championship outfit Fulham on the 20th of January, 2019.

But despite being in charge for less than a week, Mourinho looks to have transformed Spurs’ mentality away from home.
